Germany's NetCologne delivers broadband with Alcatel
Alcatel's 7670 Routing Switch Platform and 7300 ASAM pair up to provide always on, high speed Internet access via DSL
Paris, July 5, 2001 – Alcatel, (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), the world leader in broadband access, today announced it has signed an agreement with German city carrier NetCologne to supply digital subscriber line (DSL) equipment for broadband access and voice over DSL (VoDSL) services. In the core of the network, NetCologne will install nine Alcatel 7670 Routing Switch Platforms (RSP) to aggregate DSL traffic over asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), guaranteeing quality of service vital to the carrier's differentiated services portfolio. The agreement also includes customer premise equipment from Alcatel's SpeedTouch range of DSL modems. NetCologne will use Alcatel's fully integrated voice over DSL gateway on Alcatel's 7300 Advanced Services Access Multiplexer (ASAM), the world's most widely deployed broadband access platform, to offer additional voice lines over the same copper telephone wire used by subscribers for Internet access. NetCologne will control the entire network via the Alcatel 5620 Network Manager. The carrier plans to deliver fast Internet and multiple voice lines to subscribers by August 2001 and plans to use Alcatel's DSL technology to deliver further services in due course. "Alcatel's solution allows NetCologne to address both the residential and business markets. Our services are based on future-proofed technology and enable users to enjoy high bandwidth at low cost – wherever they are." said Werner Hanf, chief executive of NetCologne. "NetCologne has enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Alcatel for many years, and by helping us step up to broadband, this relationship is strengthened further. With Alcatel's DSL-based solution, we can make our services even more attractive while using our existing infrastructure." "This agreement with NetCologne enables Alcatel to extend its position as broadband access market leader," stated Willem Verbiest, president of Alcatel's DSL activities "We are delighted to be able to support NetCologne once again. With DSL, Alcatel is providing a platform for NetCologne to generate new revenues and create a differentiated offering from their existing infrastructure." DSL allows subscribers to use copper telephone wire for high-speed Internet access, at up to 200 times the speed of a standard dial-up connection. Currently Alcatel has 53% market share worldwide in DSL equipment. In 2000, Alcatel delivered six million xDSL lines to operators across the world.
About Alcatel's 7670 Routing Switch Platform The Alcatel 7670 Routing Switch Platform (RSP) is an MPLS-enabled ATM core platform designed for the heart of next generation multiservice networks. By integrating ATM and MPLS/IP onto a 450 Gbit/s scalable platform, Alcatel has provided carriers with the ability to scale existing multiservice networks to meet the demands placed on the core by the explosion of IP and broadband traffic. Supporting in-service expansion from 56 Gb/s to 450 Gb/s, the 7670 offers unparalleled scalability and leverages extensive Alcatel experience in delivering reliable, carrier class networking equipment.
About Alcatel's 5620 Network Manager The Alcatel 5620 Network Manager is the cornerstone of the Alcatel family of network and service management products for data networks. An integrated part of the Alcatel family of products, the 5620 manages wireline and wireless broadband services originating on access devices and transported over edge and core switches. The 5620 is a proven platform, currently installed in more than 1,000 networks worldwide, including over 350 service providers. The scope of the 5620 is exemplified by the broadest range of services offered on one platform, and the ability to combine multiple access types (e.g. conditional and unconditional copper, fiber, fixed wireless, mobile wireless) over a multi-protocol core (e.g. IP, MPLS, ATM).
