Women have always killed their children in the grip of postpartum depression. In some countries the law even takes this tendency into account. In fact women have always killed their children even when not suffering from postpartum depression- if they didn't Medea wouldn't be so resonant, and so understandable. The end of civilization? Do you lament the end of civilization when a man shoots his whole family? Happens often enough I can remember some incidents- but gosh, I don't remember people wailing about the end of civilization. Do we only wail about that when women go off the deep end?

Andrea Yates was in the grip of mental illness. It is too bad she didn't get help and that no one saw she needed help- but to make anything more out of it is , imo, silly. IT is a sad and tragic thing when someone falls through the cracks, and it is even worse when they take someone with them as they fall. But it happens, and not so very often. It is so rare that when it does happen every media outlet in the country picks up on the story and runs it for all it's worth. That out to be taken as a hopeful sign. The vast majority of mothers shoulder on under the increasing burdens of being both breadwinner and nuturer and they do it without going insane. Bravo women of the world.
