Pete,
Agree with you 100% about Vince Gill.
The day after the Radio City TNT concert, which I attended, I went to a private concert/party where Jeff Foskett, lead guitarist and band leader for the Brian Wilson tour performed. He puts out some impressive CD's of his own (he's the rotund guy on screen right -- Jeff is capable of singing any BB part, from Mike Love bass lead to "old" Brian falsetto).
When I talked to him, it was clear that without a doubt, Vince Gill was the performer who he was most impressed with (I believe you can even see a reaction shot of Jeff to Vince's singing during the concert). In fact, the first thing he did after the concert, was go buy Vince Gill's Greatest Hits.
A long time ago, I heard Gill sing on some country awards show and bought a few of his CD's and had the same reaction as you. Very disappointing. I'm hoping he does pull a Willie Nelson and do some albums recording great songs. Gill is also a superb guitarist, as well -- it's a shame he's put out so much mediocre material.
I saw Brian Wilson/Paul Simon in concert in Las Vegas and am going again to Holdmel, New Jersey. Brian continues to improve vocally -- it's really nice to see him working so hard at a time of his life when he could be loafing.
By the way, Ricky Martin was the only performer who was asked to be on the show. Everyone else (e.g., Billy Joel, Elton John, even Paul Simon) ASKED to be on the show. |
