"Is he for real or a straw man??" He was a fairly unaccomplished son of a wealthy merchant in Saudi Arabia. He used his inheritance and financed some minor militant stuff. Giving large amounts of money to a group living in poverty usually gets you some kudos among the local yokals. The world fame and martyrdom are of our making. Now anybody who thinks the US is too powerful knows where to send their donations. His growing force has us to thank.

The idols...I appreciate the desire to preserve culture and history. Most people look on these creations as beautiful and as embodying artistic heritage. I am sorry that it so offended Western society.

However, the idols represented something far more than merely offensive to modern Afghan culture. Its close to making a Jewish person in Israel pass by a sculpture of a Swastica or a statue of Hitler and appreciate the beauty the artist intended and respectful of the Germans of the period. The Afghans were not tyrannized by Buddists but they believe idol worship is even more destructive than being gassed.

In each case the things symbolize doom.
