There's the argument that if the price slashing hasn't relieved inventory, a write-off could be in the works. If so, maybe sooner is better than later.

Last quarter, EMC's inventory increased 57% year-over-year, compared to sales growth of 27%. That increased its Flow Ratio from 1.70 in the year-ago period to 1.76. While it's possible the price cuts got rid of the majority of the excess inventory, we won't know until full results are reported on July 18. Given the slowing demand and sales growth, a large inventory charge at some point in the future is not out of the question.
