Claude, Silver is toxic to many strains of bacteris, so they need to optimixe the strain that will survive avd do the job.
As for trade secrets, well, perhaps someone with a silver major can comment?
As for silver in decline, yes it is. loads of silver is actually coming out of India and women get liberated(gold too) and this frees up brides dowrys.

Make no mistake, the SS cams are eroding the market. Of course if you listen to Kodak or Fuji..... Same for xx-ray film. that market is also in decline, driven by the SS imagers.
Film will take ages to die in these markets. right now we have a slow decline, year after year.
