"complete (or nearly complete) commoditization of technology"

I don't think I would agree with you on that. What could loosely be called "information technology" covers a pretty broad range from pc's, networks, wireless, free space optics, metro connectivity, world wide networks and so on.

In any particular segment there are elements that have become commoditized, but usually (in any dynamic segment)
there are also considerable chunks that are characterized by innovation and the destruction of old ways.

It's the Eastern concepts of the sequence of:

CREATION
PRESERVATION
DESTRUCTION

at work.

Commoditization is the "preservation" phase, leading towards the "destruction" phase.

Namaste!
