We owned CHL for a short time and sold it at a small profit. Jay Chen used to mention he held CHL when the softbank thread was hopping. I am cautious about buying any Asian companies now and I ama not sure we can trust China - yet - just my gut feeling. The feelings of a person who grew up during the time of the McCarthy hearings, Chang Ki Shek fleeing to Taiwan(excuse my spelling, I know it is terribly wrong), the witch hunt that appeared to be going on the late 40's in the US, looking for "commies". (My 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Atkinson, was questioned by parents after one student misunderstood some WWII statement in a lesson. She was a very good teacher and a nice person, but the parents never trusted her again.)
Enough about my "personal" baggage. I think CHL is a good investment and will in the end be THE ONE to own.
If you look around these boards, my name probably shows up too often. We have over 50 stocks and 1/2 of them have changed names in the last 16 months. Unfortunately, it is the 1/2 that did not change that turns my stomach - NT, CSCO, MOT, HWP, TSIX, NOK, ERICY, and others that have TANKED big time. We reconfigured the whole portfolio on 3/29/2000 - does that tell you something? YUCK! We did at least one thing right - based on just a gut feeling we unloaded over 2K shares of ETEK and SDLI in late June 2000. The following week I was kicking myself when JDSU closed ETEK and bought SDLI. Boy am I glad now!
Gold is what I am watching lately. This economic slowdown may well set off a gold bull market. If nothing else, it is interesting to follow and read all the analysis pro and con on gold's potential. Beats reading about our current holdings.
Have a nice day, Merry |
