Re: the two dominant companies, set up their PCs such that GHz/MHz if one of the main factors that makes a PC cost more

If Intel continues to dilute the value of its chip's MHZ, they risk killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. If it ever becomes an accepted fact in the market that "Intel MHZ frequently do not equal Performance", no one will want to pay more than $75 for any Intel CPU.

AMD may have a big following in the do-it-yourself and screwdriver shops, but when Northwood and the SDR i845 chipset come out they will lose customers based on price, and with the DDR-enabled i845 they will lose sales on price/performance.

A fascinating experiment is about to performed in the marketplace. Intel will be putting Northwood on motherboards with mediocre integrated graphics against Duron / Athlon on Nvidia's integrated graphics motherboard.

Even without the disadvantage of a weaker video system, the less expensive socket 478 that Intel is moving to results in some pretty awful performance numbers.

Check out this page, then estimate what you think a Duron 1.1GHZ on an NVidia board will do against a P4 1.5GHZ on a socket 478 board:

Once performance differences approach 25%, they become clearly evident to most users, without the need for benchmarks. If MHZ is all that matters, Intel will do OK. If buyers conclude that Intel CPUs are junk regardless of MHZ (which is what happened to the original Celeron, WinChip, etc.) Intel will have a major catastrophe on its hands.
