I think you would get some argument here. For many decades while I was growing up the Western world economically raped the arab world. We went in, took their oil, and paid virtually nothing for it. The history of Britain in Egypt, Palestine, etc. was not one of creating wealth, but of taking wealth and leaving poverty behind. It wasn't until the formation of Opec that the Islamic world started to gain some of the economic benfits of its oil reserves.
Let's not forget that there were sophisticated cities in the Middle East while our ancestors were still living in hovels and eating raw meat. The greatest library of its day was in Alexandria. The pyramids have never yet been duplicated. We continue today to use arabic mathematial numbering rather than western Roman numerals; we use astronomical principles founded by the Arabs, and on and on.
For the last few hundred years, the Western world's technology has become paramount. No argument there. And we have led the world in develping ever more advanced ways of killing people. Without Western science, there would be no atomic weapons, no nuclear missles, etc. Yes, we have produced many scientific advances, many good, some not so good.
But the claim that without Western wealth there would be no modern Islam today is simply absurd. |
