Or the design might not be converging. In which case they need the faster devices of the SOI process to even achieve the specs they are trying to get to with Hammer design. Remember they already burned up the copper advantage in the Athlon. I have a sneaky suspicion that SOI will not buy them all they are hoping for.

AMD has also cashed in their .13u check with their current transistors. But regardless of the process issues raised, there is a clear and compelling reason to tapeout ASAP. Debugging silicon. You can't simulate everything and the completely new chipsets/buss architecture needs real live processor silicon at least as badly as the core. AMD is taking the ultimate risk, new CPU architecture, new buss architecture, new chipset silicon and new process.
