What a difference 10 months can make. Last summer Pacific Century Cyberworks's chairman and founder Richard Li was in best bantering form at a press conference when he announced a takeover of Hong Kong Telecom from Cable & Wireless of the UK in August.

Since then PCCW and its internet ambitions have become a bit of a joke. Local wags like to say that its internet offering, NOW (Network of the World), stands for No One is Watching.

This week the Hong Kong internet upstart company announced the sacking of 340 workers while 34-year-old Li tried to keep a low profile. On Wednesday, Li made the briefest of appearances to announce restructuring plans.

But before he could duck out, the local press forced him to take a few questions. It was hardly a brilliant performance. But at least this lacklustre show was better than the company's recent announcement of its annual results. Li didn't bother to show up. ....
