I personally don't think it fits the pattern of Cisco's past purchases. So I would bet that it is just an unsubstantiated rumor. There will inevitably be a lot of those types of rumors flying around in the coming years, because most people think the networking industry will do quite a bit of consolidating in that time frame. Anyway, I just can't see Cisco buying Marconi. Their businesses aren't really in any of Cisco's targeted market segments, where they anticipate high growth (e.g. storage networking, Metro optical, Multi-Unit networking, etc). So I wonder why this rumor even began. Strange.
