An interesting statistic during that time was the high percentage of families in homeless shelters. During the '70s in particular, the homeless for the most part were single and had some form of mental illness. It wasn't until the '80s that we had entire families that were homeless in any numbers...

You might argue that this was the regrettable result of getting inflation and the economy under control. But to deny the impact of high unemployment and the lack of services for the unemployed is revisionism. I did my part during the '80s to keep inflation under control, I know. Fortunately, I didn't have a family to feed then. If I had, I could have easily been rendered homeless. On the other hand, I probably wouldn't have gambled going to work for some of the small companies I did, but not everyone had the choices I did. There was a terrible toll taken on small companies during that period.
