The Collings Foundation flew their B-24 Liberator and their B-17 Flying Fortress to Juneau today for tours and flights. I took a flight last year on their annual visit, and it was worth every penny of the $750 it cost for me and my wife. When I get rich enough, I'm going to become a sponsor. It only costs $5000 and you get to fly for free whenever they come to town.

As I looked around the 909, the B-17, I wondered what it was like for my father-in-law to fly one out of Thurleigh fourteen times and then spend the next two years in Stalag 14. No place on that plane was comfortable or safe. I wonder how we found so many heroes to fly into harms way.

It's one thing to fly in one past the Mendenhall Glacier and some of the most beautiful scenery on earth and quite another to fly one knowing there was a darn good chance you would not survive.
