My gosh, E, that is a very sobering story about your recuperation from morphine use. If someone like you got addicted, who was using it legitimately for pain and tends not to misuse medication, imagine how seductive it is to those with addictive personalities.

Ever since then i've wondered how addicts who've been through such withdrawal experiences once can voluntarily start
taking drugs again knowing they'll have to repeat the horror. This amazes me. I'd guess that morphine/oxycodone
withdrawal can't be much different from heroine withdrawal. The symptoms are the same.

The most interesting thing about addicts, IMO, is the personality structure: ie. lack of responsibility for their behavior, problems with social conscience, inability to plan for the future. To me, these aspects appear as important as the "high" itself in the recidivism aspect of drug addiction.

I worked as a drug and alcohol counselor in the 80's and have a family member who is a crack addict, so I've had the unfortunate opportunity to see this close-up.
