Thanks for outlining your position Palau. Here are some observations from my pov.

"What most people cared about in the decision was whether the Court would allow a recount to proceed or not. On that score, the vote was 5-4."

People with your pov seem to view the 5-4 as the only decision the US SC made that mattered. I believe fairness is important in an election and your guy mucked up the waters by using rules that allowed him to cherry pick votes that would benefit him alone. The FL SC was clearly on Gore's side in this issue and provided a ruling that was remanded by the US SC on a 9-0 vote. That means every one of the Supremes felt it was UNFAIR and had no legal basis. At the next juncture the FL SC provided another ruling without addressing the concerns the US SC had about the 1st one, and this decision was struck down on a 7 to 2 vote. No swing vote there. Finally the US SC said there is no more time to get it right on the 5 to 4 vote. It completely surprised me that this vote was not unanimous because Gore and co had kept this thing alive through any means possible and created a situation where fairness was impossible. This is the point where people with your pov must either be untruthful with themselves or not care whether it was fair or not as long as Gore won (which is the EXACT position that Gore himself had). This was documented by witnesses who acknowledged that Gore's lawyers specifically shut down the people within who really wanted a "fair and accurate" recount. If Gore had tried for a "fair and accurate" recount from the beginning he would have probably gotten it (and he STILL would have lost). Problem is he wanted it too bad, and his tactics like throwing out military votes and absentee ballots showed that big time. Could you really not see that? Do you really believe that Sandra Day O'Conner is the reason your guy is out of work? He is a weasley cheat that lost at the polls and in the courtroom. All that is left for the left is to disparage the US SC and it's members. Pretty pathetic I think.
