RE: my 401k is down over 60% since spring 2000

I know too many people in this situation. My 401K tech fund is down 68% for the year (T.Rowe Price). I am happy to say that I moved my 401K money out of tech before the crash (I did take a bath with some tech stocks that I own). However, this problem is not with 401K's it is with foolish investors. Should we eliminate potentially the greatest personal investment vehicle available to the avg person just because some people spend less time planning their 401k strategy than they do picking the movie rentals for the weekend? How about we put all 401K money under the control of a Govt nanny. Then we can see the same fantastic micro-returns as we see with social security.

A well managed hybrid fund that has a mix of TBills, stocks, and bonds would provide reasonably safe growth over the long run. This is the sort of vehicle that should be available for social security. My sister works for a state govt. They have an alternative to social security. She has built an impressive retirement nest egg over the last 20 years using just the 12.5% payroll tax that would have otherwise been poured down the SSN toilet.
