I was in software since 1968. I don't think of software as a technology driver. It has not even remotely kept pace with hardware advances. In many cases, software is as poor at providing the glue for technology as duct tape would be for autos, aircraft, and electronics. In fact, the PC era developed with incredibly poor software as the dominant paradigm. 20 years and 256MB of DRAM later, current PC software is reputed not to crash all the time.
