I stopped in Circuit City in Poughkeepsie N.Y. yesterday.
I have been periodically checking AMD availability in this store. In all other visits (going back well over a year), AMD was well represented with 30% to 40% of the perhaps 25 displayed desktop systems. This always included Durons and a good range of Athlons from both H.P. and Compaq. Yesterday, there were NO Durons displayed and only single Athlon (1.2GHz) systems from both H.P. and Compaq. There were 5 AMD laptop systems out of the perhaps 20 laptops displayed. I questioned three salesmen regarding AMD availability. None could explain. They said in the past the AMD systems always sold very well and probably outsold the Intel systems despite the fact that they never constituted more than 40% of the systems on display. I have to conclude that at some level, these display slots are bought and sold and Intel currently is paying to keep quite a few AMD systems off of display racks.
