CA's BrightStor(TM) Enterprise Backup Solution Sets New Standard In Storage Management Performance
Doculabs' Audited Assessments Record Greater Than 1.5 TB/Hour of Backup Throughput
ORLANDO, Fla., July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- CA WORLD -- Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today announced that its new backup and recovery solution, BrightStor Enterprise Backup, has recorded the fastest ``hot'' online backup of very large databases, according to assessments performed on platforms from Sun Microsystems and Hewlett-Packard Company, and audited by Doculabs, Inc., an independent analyst and advisory firm.

The assessments demonstrated sustained backup throughputs greater than 1.5 TB (terabytes)/hour on the Solaris 8 Operating Environment (OE), and greater than 1 TB/hour on HP-UX.

Performed on a Sun Microsystems Enterprise 10000 server with 33 processors running the Solaris OE and a HP Superdome 9000 Computer Server with eight processors running HP-UX 11i, the assessments were preset to deliver the maximum ``hot'' online backup throughput of large relational databases. This setting was established to demonstrate the capability of BrightStor Enterprise Backup to significantly reduce backup windows, a critical element for enterprise computing environments.

``In order to keep pace with the availability demands of eBusiness, IT managers are faced with the challenge of implementing reliable backup solutions that provide the highest levels of performance for mission-critical enterprise information systems,'' said Jeetu Patel, executive vice president of Research at Doculabs. ``By achieving these landmark benchmarks on two of the leading Enterprise Operating Systems, Computer Associates has proven its capability to deliver enterprise-class solutions that enable reliable backup of large information systems within the given backup windows, helping to ensure that IT managers have optimum availability of business-critical data.''

The IT architecture for the Solaris 8 OE and the HP-UX 11i tests consisted of a Fibre Channel storage infrastructure, with the backup application and the database application both residing on the servers. The tests were performed with CA's BrightStor Enterprise Backup performing backups with 4, 8 and 16 streams on HP-UX 11i, and 4, 8, 16 and 25 streams on Solaris 8 OE. They demonstrated near-linear scalability in throughput in both environments.

``With the massive volume of data that today's businesses are dealing with, the speed of the backup process has become absolutely critical to their operations,'' said Phil Treide, vice president of marketing, storage solutions, CA. ``By delivering these incredibly fast and powerful backup solutions, CA not only protects our customers' data but also helps make sure that the information is available for their critical eBusiness operations.''

BrightStor Enterprise Backup is the first product in CA's new BrightStor storage line. It offers customers virtually unlimited scalability to meet their continually growing eBusiness storage needs on Unix and Windows NT/2000 platforms, as well as reduced backup windows that can significantly enhance the timeliness of their critical recovery data.
