Four aces gave the bartender a full
house

YOU'RE A bartender at a country club, and
Saturday is your busiest day anyway. Then they call
you with the news:
Lou Valentino shot a hole in one at the 127-yard
second hole with a 9-iron.
At the Glen Ridge (N.J.) Country Club, an ace
means a free drink for each of the members playing
that day. For bartender Michael Murphy (isn't every
bartender named Michael Murphy?), it was time to
warm up the elbow. That day about 200 members
were on hand. Then:
C.Y. Huang shot a hole in one at the 130-yard fourth
with a 7-iron.
"It was 95 degrees and humid on Saturday," Murphy
told Open Season. "I was the only bartender
working. The bar services both the Grill Room and
the Par and Bogey Room. I was pouring a lot of beer
but also a lot of cosmopolitans, golden margaritas,
you name it." Then starter Bill Mosel called assistant
club manager Christine Mielnicki: "You're not going
to believe this -- we have another hole in one."
Mielnicki: "I thought he was kidding me."
Steve Decker shot a hole in one at the 154-yard
eighth hole with a 7-iron.
Murphy had to go to a storage room to get more
glasses. At Glen Ridge, a club that dates back to
1894, it was raining cocktails. "It was a happy day,"
Mielnicki said. "I asked Michael if he wanted a
break, but he didn't want to be taken away from the
bar. He wanted to stay back there." And then:
Tom DeVito shot a hole in one at the 175-yard 11th
hole with a 7-wood.
Four aces in one day is believed to be a first at a
course sanctioned by the United States Golf
Association.
"It was probably the busiest day I've had in 20
years," Murphy said. "I was there for 10 hours. It
was an all-out celebration. Everybody knew it was
something that would never happen again.
Fortunately for me, the following day it rained. I got a
chance to rest. You don't get much work as a
country-club bartender when it rains."
