I should have been clearer about what I meant. I think that you can believe studies and reports prepared by civil servants for publication. You may want to be cautious about the cover letter, written or extensively edited by some politico's special assistant, but I think you can believe the report. I expect that you can believe peer-reviewed reports prepared by scientists from reputable institutions. I wasn't talking about practitioners in the field. I expect that they have the same foibles as everyone else.
