With Electronic Shelf Labels, gone is the phrase, "Price Check on Lane 5"

NCR's Wireless Electronic Shelf Labels eliminate surprises for
price-conscious shoppers;
Addresses consumer demand for clear, accurate pricing -- from the store
shelf to the checkout

TORONTO, July 11 /CNW/ - NCR Corporation, the first company to offer a
wireless electronic shelf labeling system, has unveiled a more-cost effective
solution that replaces paper shelf labels, and provides shoppers and retailers
alike with 100 per cent pricing accuracy throughout the store.
"No one has ever disputed the advantages of electronic shelf labels;
rather, it was the cost to retailers that hampered its widespread acceptance,"
said Brian Sullivan, NCR Canada's Vice President of Retail Solutions. "NCR's
DecisioNet electronic shelf labels have added functionality, are lower in
cost, and provide retailers with an attractive return on investment. What this
now means for consumers is a larger number of grocery chains, warehouse
stores, supercentres, wholesale clubs, drug and convenience stores, and
hypermarkets can use electronic shelf labeling to ensure pricing is easy to
find, easy to read, and accurate - from the store shelf to the checkout."

Consumer Demand
Beyond the attractive return on investment, research shows a probable
yield in improved customer service. Electronic shelf labels (ESL) directly
address five of the top ten issues that consumers indicate they want in a
store, including clearly labeled items and accurate pricing(*).
KPMG and Indiana University conducted a similar study that revealed 64
percent of consumers felt a store that featured electronic shelf labels
offered better customer service.
At present, U.S. retailers are ahead of Canada in adopting wireless
electronic shelf labeling systems. According to Jim Whittaker, director of
management support for the New York-based Binghamton Giant Markets,
"Electronic shelf labels are a visual symbol of a retailer's commitment to its
customers. Customers are reminded at each item that you're going to give them
more information to make informed buying decisions, and you're going to
protect them by ensuring they pay the correct price, every time."
With NCR DecisioNet, retailers can also immediately respond to
competitive pricing pressures through more frequent and subtle price changes,
storewide and even chain-wide, at the touch of a button. As an example,
shoppers could take advantage of 'happy hour pricing' on pop and chips, every
Friday evening between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Other benefits include retailers'
ability to offer improved loyalty programs, more information on new products,
special offers and nutritional facts.
"Clearly, this is an opportunity for retailers to make a meaningful,
relevant connection to the customer, and the resulting loyalty can yield
returns for years to come," Sullivan said.
