signs of desperation in the "HANDSET" market?.... -g-

AMSTERDAM, July 11 (Reuters) - Keen to boost sales in a flagging
market, a Dutch company is offering vibrators to customers who buy
mobile handsets and take out subscriptions.
Amsterdam-based telecom services firm Tring this month launched
the campaign with the title "An in-depth conversation" in a weekly
gossip magazine.
The move to give away the sex toys has already drawn fire from

leading Dutch phone operator KPN Telecom <KPN.AS>, whose mobile
services are being offered, and Finland's Nokia <NOK1V.HE>, the maker
of the phones.
"We are not at all happy with the campaign and we have asked that
it be stopped. It's not our style at all...We were also unhappy with
their bid to draw customers from other operators," a KPN spokeswoman
said.
A Tring official told Reuters on Thursday the company had decided
to withdraw the advertising campaign, although the offer would
continue until the end of the month.
"The market has been poor, so we thought we'd try something more
extreme...We're not just using sex to sell. The products are very
well designed," he said, adding that additional sales as a result of
the offer had been limited.
