I guess you CoservoReaganites don't like this either.......California to offer prostate treatment to low-income and uninsured men SACRAMENTO (AP)-- California will offer the nation's first statewide prostate cancer treatment program for low-income and uninsured men, Gov. Gray Davis said Wednesday.
The Improving Access, Counseling and Treatment for Californians with Prostate Cancer (IMPACT) program will receive $10 million this year and $20 million each of the next two years from the state treasury and national tobacco settlement funds.
The program, managed by the University of California, Los Angeles, recently began providing services at the UCLA Medical Center, and hospitals run by the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of California, Davis, in Sacramento.
Early next year, sites will be opened at the University of California, Irvine, and the University of California, San Diego, followed by additional locations.
Each site offers patient care and works with local health departments and health care providers to establish a network of evaluation and treatment centers.
There is no age limit, but participants must have limited or no health insurance, and incomes less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level.
One emphasis will be reaching men who might be missed for cultural or ethnic reasons, or because they have difficulty reading.
About three-quarters of prostate cancer is diagnosed in men 65 and older. Black men are 70 percent more likely to develop the disease than non-Hispanic white men. |
