I think you are absolutely right about the fiber-optic parallel. Wonderful analogy.

I guess it wasn't necessary to import 100,000 Chinese, irish, italians, Poles, etc to lay the cables, however. So the future will not offer any good cuisines as a result of fiber otpics. (I am thinking of the Chinatowns all along the routes of the railroads.)
