Dell gives motherboard order to Asustek

Samson Yu, Taipei; Noah Sauve, DigiTimes.com [Wednesday 11 July 2001]

On July 9, following much speculation, Dell Computer’s OEM order for Socket 478 Pentium 4 motherboards was finally confirmed to have gone to Asustek Computer. Starting in August, Asustek will produce close to 200,000 P4 boards for Dell each month.

According to sources, Dell is interested in outsourcing even more, and by year-end Asustek may be responsible for 30% of its motherboard needs. Dell is also said to be looking for other Taiwanese motherboard OEMs.

This is the first time Dell has placed an OEM order for motherboards in Taiwan. The company is very demanding of OEM partners, and at one time or another First International Computer (FIC), Acer, Asustek, Gigabyte Technology and Micro-Star International (MSI) have all been snubbed by Dell for being under par.

Nevertheless, Dell’s low-price strategy has made it almost impossible not to seek lower cost production. The company relies heavily on Quanta, Compal and Acer DMS for notebooks and Quanta for PC servers.
