Glitch hits mobile phone system in Beijing

Some Beijing mobile phone users of the Global System for
Mobiles (GSM) network in the Chinese capital were unable
to make or receive calls Wednesday when an unexplained
glitch in the network prevented signals from connecting,
Xinhua reports.

The city's mobile communication company is working
urgently to resume operation of the communication system.

Sources from the China Mobile Communication Corporation
(CMCC) attributed the trouble to the increase of new GSM
users after the recent cancellation of the network
registration charge, as well as the influx of tourists with
mobile phones to the city who occupy a sizable chunk of
the GSM network. CMCC did not say exactly when the
network would be back to normal.
