That's an erroneous comparison. A buy and hold investor, by definition, generally holds for a very long time, not just for one year. So the real question is would an investor who followed Sagawa's advice from 1996 through 2001 have outperformed a buy and hold investor who held Cisco for that entire time. I doubt it. I've close to tripled my money in that period of time by holding onto those Cisco shares I purchased on 1996, despite this last year's downturn. That's a damn good return in my book. Can Sagawa match that? My opinion of him is that he is a sensationalist. His analysis is sometimes good, but he's usually way off on timing. In general, people who try to time usually end up screwing themselves over the long haul. JMHO and that's why I'm a LTBH investor.
