The playing field is getting more crowded all of the time. There is an interesting article in WSJ about Motorola's third satellite system. In contrast to previous claims that their second system "M-Star" is replacing Iridium it will in fact offer no voice transmission at all. Neither will the newest system dubbed "Celestri". It appears as if Motorola is trying to position itself as the premier satellite builder on the planet. To accomplish this they have developed a production line system for satellite construction that is amazing the industry with the speed and low cost at which they are putting them out. Here are the players according to WSJ:
PROJECT FUNCTION SATELLITES COST LEAD BACKER
Teledesic High speed 288 $9.0B Craig McCaw
data, Bill Gates
teleconferencing

Iridium Voice, fax, paging 66 $5.0B Motorola

Skybridge Data 64 $3.9B Alcatel/Loral

Celestri Data, broadcast 63 $12.9B Motorola
and video

Globalstar voice 48 $2.5B Loral

ICO Global Voice 12 $4.6B Hughes/Comsat
Communications

For some reason they ommitted M-Star and Cyberstar. Any info. out there on these systems.
