AMD actually had a faster 286 back in the early '80s - and this is what initially triggered Intel's anger.

AMD used Intel's 286 design - and DESIGN WINS - and managed to goose their process (they obviously didn't have and design and marketing expenses !) to get faster chips and under cut Intel's sales.

Intel transitioined to the 386 and effectively killed off AMD's x86 efforts until the early 1990s when, indeed, AMD came out with a faster 386 than Intel's (40 MHz vs. 33 MHz) but Intel had already moved on to the 486.

A few years later, AMD's 486 was "faster" than Intel's 486, (150 MHz vs 100 MHz) but again, Intel had moved on to the Pentium.

And so it goes.
