Brazil's Telemar Sees 2002 Capex At BRR4 Billion - Report

Dow Jones Online News, 07/12/2001 13:16

SAO PAULO -(Dow Jones)- Brazil's Tele Norte Leste Participacoes SA (TNE), or Telemar, plans to make capital expenditures of about 4 billion reals ($1=BRR2.57) in 2002, local daily Valor reported Thursday.

Brazil's biggest phone company will spend about BRR1 billion expanding a new wireless network, with the rest slated to expand the company's fixed-line operations in 2002.

Previously, the company has said it hopes to scale back its 2001 capital expenditures by roughly BRR1 billion to about BRR7.4 billion, from an originally planned BRR8.4 billion. Slower economic growth and a rise in uncollected bills as the company extends service to lower-income clients have caused the company to trim outlays.

Nevertheless, Telemar says it will meet in 2001 network expansion targets set by regulator Anatel that will allow the company to offer services nationwide beginning in January.
