TO THE THREAD:

Like millions of others, I have been a tech investor over the last 5 or 6 years.

In that arena it is possible to look at rather obvious trends, such as the growth of the internet, and look at what that has spawned relative to technology companies such as fibre optic network operators, network equipment companies, storage access companies, server companies and so on. I am interested in gaining a parallel understanding to that for commodities.

I know nothing of commodities, relatively speaking. But my questions (maybe they're the wrong questions?) are:

1) What are the major economic trends that affect commodities?

2) Are any new commodities being created by that?

3) Are any moribund old-line commodities going to spring into life as a result?

4) Which people operate the functional equivalent of a
hedge-fund for commodities that aim to take particular
advantage of new developments?

5) Are there any true innovators in the world of commodities? Doing what?

If anyone has any knowledge or considered opinion on these or related matters, I (and hopefully others) would find it
interesting.

Namaste!

Jim
