The quarterly Applied backlog is from their quarterly reports and cannot be disputed. The blue bars represent cumulative [orders minus billings] with an arbitrary beginning. So the only useful data is the month-to-month change, not the absolute value. I used to believe until last week that it also excluded order cancellations. Then Don Wennerstrom e-mailed SEMI and was told that SEMI each month subtracts cancellations from new orders. So I'll have to change the third line warning on the chart. Maybe I should also instead chart the month-to-month change in backlog only?
