There was a reason in the past - and there are new reasons in the present:

AMD762 + VIA686B: not a happy couple? (HARDWARE)

Thanks to William ("Liam C") for pointing us to AMD's White paper which describes incompatibilities between AMD762 Northbridge and the VIA686B southbridge.

According to industry sources, combining the VIA686B southbridge and AMD762 Northbridge is, at this moment, the only way to build a relatively cheap Dual Athlon MP board.

Industry sources told us that for example MSI's K7D Master will not arrive in August as a result of these incompatibilities. Several Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers are working closely with AMD to solve the incompatibilities. It is not clear when AMD762 + VIA686B based boards will arrive (End of September?).

In other words, Tyan's Thunder board remains - for now - the only AMD760 MP solution. In our experience, Tyan's Thunder board is a very stable board. A small bug ("Random cold boot failure") has been solved by the 2.06 bios update.
