Ken: They seem to be expanding pretty aggressively in California.
We visited their SuperStore in Cerritos which is near one of the
big regional shopping centers and it's doing a great business. From
what I've seen, I don't think Target is any real competition when
Wal-Mart moves in and, certainly, K-Mart has proven that it's in no
position to challenge WMT's lead. Maybe you saw the disastrous
KM-Canada business while Wal-Mart, a relatively new entry to that
country, is already the top contender. By "urban" areas, I don't
mean downtown because I think in the big cities these discounters
can't operate on their thin margins when they have to pay high real
estate prices, as K-Mart found out in Manhattan. But there is still
a lot of room for WMT to expand into urban "commute" areas of the
bigger cities, such as they've done in some areas of Los Angeles
and Orange Counties.
