Mobile phone system returns normal in Beijing

The Global System for Mobiles (GSM) network in the Chinese capital resumed normal operations early Thursday morning after emergency repair by technicians with the city's mobile communication company and the network supplier Nokia Corporation, Xinhua reports.

According to the Beijing Morning Post, some of the GSM users were unable to make or receive calls Wednesday when an unexplained glitch in the network prevented signals from connecting.

Sources from the China Mobile Communication Corporation (CMCC) attributed the trouble to the increase of new GSM users after the recent cancellation of the network registration charge, as well as the influx of tourists with mobile phones to the city who occupy a sizable chunk of the GSM network.
