His point is merely that Americans have been salivating about the Chinese market for many, many decades, and have generally been wrong in the past.

substitute "westerners" for "americans" and "centuries" for "decades" and you've got it.

As for why you should pay attention, gdi, jeez... I don't know, because it adds some much-needed perspective to the market for X in China, and because you invest in a company whose growth story is, in part, based on dominating the soon-to-be-huge market for a good in China.

The point of the article is, extravagantly over-optimistic expectations for sales in China are systematic in western business culture, and has been for centuries. Doesn't mean the Chinese market won't expand, but... check yourself.
