Flawed argument. It's the subscriber choice that counts. How many GSM users will want to abandon their cheap GSM phone for bulky and expensive tri-mode gsm/gprs/umts phone? How many will give up gsm/gprs service for expensive gsm/gprs/umts service? Carriers foolish enough to go the gsm/gprs/umts route will only succeeded in offering an expensive and unattractive 3G service. As carriers see how reluctant subscribers are to buy the expensive phones and use the expensive service, the UMTS deployments will slow then stop. They haven't found an application for UMTS that would make most consumers pay the hefty premium. As carriers see how little market there is for expensive UMTS, carriers not built out will change their plans.
