There are a variety of tests for the concept of self. Most have been developed to determine what other species recognize themselves as individuals, but some have been specific for humans and designed to determine when a self image develops. There is a correspondance between when an infant tests positive for awareness and later questions about their earliest memories. It varies by individual. I did a quick search on the subject and there were zillions of references but I havent taken the time to review them so I won't paste any of those links here, but it is a frequently written topic.

As religion. I actually have had religious schooling. That is where I picked up the concept that the sense of self, the voice in your head, your personal image, was the soul. It is what makes a person unique and is the part which lives on after the body dies. There are lots of variations to Christianity so I'm not surprised that different sects have different ideas.

Finally DNA and the sense of self. Here there are a couple of points. Human DNA in a living cell is not enough to have a sense of self. This is obvious since you can easily scrape living cells off your tounge. The cells even have the potential to become a full fledged thinking human if subjected to proper cloning techniques. Still, DNA alone does not mean sentinence.

DNA does lead to the sense of self. Humans (and studies indicate some other primates) will develop a sense of self as a normal part of growing up. The information is in the DNA. A rhesus monkey will never develop a sense of self because it doesn't have the right makeup in the brain. In this way the DNA, the particular DNA information that codes our brains is married and tied to the sense of self.

Finally
people found them offensive
I expected that many people would. The subject of abortion is too often one of slogans and authorities. Important policies should be ones of contemplation and empathy.
