Vulcan Materials expects Q2 earnings below consensus

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., July 11 (Reuters) - Chemicals and construction materials firm Vulcan Materials Co. (NYSE:VMC - news) said on Wednesday that second-quarter earnings would not meet consensus forecasts as softness in the manufacturing economy dampened demand for its products.

Vulcan said it expects to report earnings of 77 cents to 78 cents per share compared to 75 cents a year ago. Analysts' estimates ranged from 78 cents per share to 90 cents with a consensus at 80 cents, according to market research firm Thomson Financial/First Call. Shares of Vulcan Materials dropped 69 cents to $51.73 Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange. The shares have outperformed the Standard & Poor's 500 index by nearly 22 percent since the start of the year.
