U.S. Steel Says Stronger Steel Shipments
To Restrain Loss in the Second Quarter

PITTSBURGH -- USX-U.S. Steel Group said Friday it expects to post a second-quarter loss that is narrower that current Wall Street estimates as domestic steel shipments jumped 10% from first-quarter levels.

The company's domestic steel shipments for the second quarter reached 2.6 million tons, a 10% improvement over first-quarter levels. Shipments from its U.S. Steel Kosice business, located in the Slovak Republic, reached 1.1 million tons, about 40% higher than the first quarter. Its overall steel shipments reached 2.9 million tons in the 2000 second quarter.
