You have hit upon the main problem with the elderly as pertains to SS. They were brain-washed into believing that SS was the "only" way for them to survive when they became too old to work. I started paying FICA in the early 50s, and was angry that I was not given a choice. Even then, it was apparent that anytime you send a dollar to DC to be re-distributed, you will only get the smaller portion of that dollar back. All those government employees, sit on their asses, draw fairly large salaries, and gobble up other peoples' money through lethargy, and waste. Had any, thinking, person been given the opportunity to invest for their own future, they would have quadrupled, at least, their return, and it would have been all theirs.
Big government is a big bully. They promise you cradle to the grave security, and hold you in bondage until you die. I don't like that trade-off.
