Regarding getting a Technology Mutual fund instead of an Index Fund you said.... Please explain the logic behind that advice. I am a great believer in indexing for those who don't have the time or inclination to manage their own investments

I agree with what you say if I was talking to someone that wanted to start investing and do zero to almost zero analysis on the markets but wants to profit over the longer term based on historic trends.

The reason I gave this idea to the this specific person on this specific thread had to do with the fact that this persons current portfolio and obvious bias/style clearly demonstrates a belief and conviction for the technology sector. This is consistent with the obvious slant this thread has for the same, based on the GK portfolios and the stock selection within them. One of the scenarios they mentioned was keeping the stock and holding it out with little or no attention given to it or the companies current fundamentals. The other idea presented to them was to get an SP index fund with its diversification. This would be quite a contrast to the original specific investor intent and belief in technology and its future. I thought that by getting a high quality technology fund, that they would in effect somewhat compromise between the two ideas, while actually staying closer to the original intent of this investor. This would diversify them within the sector at least and this way he can be invested in tech and let a full time money manager worry about the day to day research of the fundamentals of the economy and companies (which this investor does not want to do). Another way to accomplish this and preserve the investors intent would be to invest in the Naz100 index (QQQ) instead of the SP500. I do agree with what you say as a generalization but my idea was specifically geared for the individual that posted the question.
