If I understand...

You're trading your current 20G with a 30G or 40G.

You now have an image of your (C:) stored on (D:)

You will be removing your current (C:), replacing it with a new drive. Your current (D:) will remain.

You plan on restoring the image stored on (D:) to the new (larger) drive (C:)

I cannot see any easier approach.

You may get an informational warning about the size change.

Once you're finished, the new drive (C:) will contain all the data from the old drive along with additional storage provided by the larger drive.
