Does anyone adore you? A hard thing to imagine on the evidence I've seen, but it is possible, I suppose, that there might be a kinder, gentler, smarter Gao hidden beneath the venom, bile, spittle, and apparent absence of functional synapses. Does their hypothetical adoration define your identity?

"Commie" amuses me intensely. Every hardcore leftie I meet denounces me as a pawn of the right because, among other things, I approve of free trade, I think multinational investment is a good thing for the developing world, and I think the environmental movement has been coopted by a bunch of clueless superstition-laden misfits. The righties think I'm a commie because I believe in fiscal responsiblity and keeping government out of people's private lives (I'm still trying to figure out the relationship between that and being a commie).

I think this is very funny, and I take it as evidence that I must be doing something right. Every time I encounter an individual or institution that is anathema to extremists both sides, I start developing warm cozy feelings. I'm even starting to think kindly thoughts about the IMF....

"Coward" is even funnier, though of course you don't know why.
