"Enlighten me"

Well Rich, if an argument exists that conclusively answers the question as a scientific fact I haven't heard it. On the other hand I am sure that it is sometime between conception and birth. That is really all that can be said for sure. Although I did see an argument that argued even after birth a chidl is not human. The ultimate insanity in my view.

Now as to when life coms into existence, the Courts have said when the fetus is viable i.e. when it can live outsidethe womb. Of course, how long will it be before it will not even be necessary to implant the egg in the womb?? Then does life begin at conception??? I doubt it.

Others have determined that it is when the fetus becomes sentient. Carl Sagan wrote an article saying this occured sometime after the first trimester. I was not convinced that this could be determined. My own test is the fetus is human when it is recognizable to the naked eye as a human being. Not sure it is bette than anyone else's but it makes sense to me.

However the inability to ascertain the exact moment the fetus becomes human is not in and of itself a hindrance to state regulation of abortion. I believe that the State has a compelling interest in the well being of the fetus and if the State determines that a fetus should be protected from conception this, given the other intrusions on our freedom that have been permitted by the courts, is a legitimate act of legislation. So my belief is that the matter is best settled by the various State Legislatures passing laws as to what they believe is correct. Of course given the Supreme Court's decisions on this matter, which I do not believe can be reconciled with at least a hundred years of legal opinions, this cannot be. So it seems we are destined to never have a political solution to this issue and therfore this sore will fester forever.

Of this I am certain a society that permits as many abortions as we do is a sick society. It is breeding a total lack of respect for human life.
