<<Killing people is done all times of the year. >>

So does stopping violent criminals. Crimnals fear nothing more than an armed citizen.

When two men tried to rob Coast Guardsman Jorge Anez in a movie theater parking lot, he took out his own gun and shot his assailants killing one and critically wounding the other. Anez, 23, was walking across the theater's parking lot around 11:40 p.m. when a man stepped out of a blue Chevy Caprice, pointed a gun at Anez, and ordered him to go to his car and turn over his belongings, said police spokesman Carlos Negron. When Anez reached into his car, the armed man pistol-whipped him. Fearing he would be killed, Anez then pulled out his own gun. His assailant started to run away, then turned and pointed his gun at the guardsman. Anez fired several shots hitting the gunman and a second man who had gotten out of the car. A third man, the driver of the Caprice, and another accomplice then sped off. (Sun-Sentinel, Deerfield Beach, FL, 4/22/01)

When Karl Provost returned to his home after a pleasant walk in a local garden, he was shaken to find one of his windows had been broken. As he entered his home, Provost picked up his rifle for protection. "At that point, I didn't really know what I was dealing with, and I felt more comfortable with a gun in my hand," he said. When Provost entered his bedroom, he discovered a man rooting through his things. When he confronted the suspect with his rifle, the man surrendered peacefully and Provost called the police. The man broke into his former girlfriend's home about 10:30 one Thursday night. The woman ran into her bedroom, and the man pursued her. When he entered the bedroom, the woman fired one fatal shot at him, dropped the gun, called 911 and fled the house. The intruder had two convictions for domestic violence against the same woman within the past year. (The News-Tribune, Tacoma, WA, 4/28/01)

Store owner Anselmo Nieves shot and killed an armed robber who had turned his gun toward a customer. Tyrone Ingram, 32, walked into the Cidras Super Market, pointed a gun at a female cashier and announced a stickup. Nieves handed over the cash drawer and some cigarettes, police said. Ingram then allegedly hit Nieves over the head, knocking him to the floor. When a female customer entered the store, Ingram, who had a criminal record for armed robbery, allegedly pointed his gun at the woman. Nieves responded by grabbing his shotgun and firing at the robber killing him instantly, said Police News Affairs Officer Edward Alonzo. No charges will be filed against Nieves, who had narrowly escaped death a year earlier when a robber held a gun to his head and fired just as Nieves moved nicking his ear. Charles Harris generously provided more than a ride to three young hitchhikers he picked up on I-70-he took them to his home and cooked them a hot meal. The youths repaid the random act of kindness by attacking Harris with knives from his kitchen. After inflicting wounds to his head, hands, shoulder and chest, the assailants stopped only when Harris offered them money. Then he went into another room and returned not with money but with a .44-cal. handgun. After shooting one attacker in the chest, Harris shot out one of his Cadillac's tires-preventing the others from fleeing-before calling the authorities. Police captured the suspects a quarter-mile away. (The Daily Sentinel, Grand Junction, CO, 3/3/01)

An East Side convenience store owner fended off a knife-wielding thug with a gun he keeps for protection since he was robbed several years ago in a similar attack. "The suspect made a move toward the store owner and, as he (the suspect) was coming around the corner, the owner thought this guy would kill him," stated Sgt. Paul Guzda of the Stamford, Conn., Detective Bureau. The owner grabbed his gun and fired two shots that sent the suspect running. Evidence at the scene shows no one was injured, and police were looking for leads as to the suspect's identity. (The Connecticut Post, Stamford, CT, 4/15/01)
