I find it hypocritical to place "pets" on such a high level in a country which condones so much cruelty to so called "farm animals."

I wouldn't call that hypocritical. I'm not any happier than you are about cruelty to farm animals, but it's natural for us to have more concern for a member of our family than a stranger. That applies to pets and chicken dinners just as it applies to an abused spouse who is our sister than an abused spouse on the other side of the world. I don't see why we can't increase our empathy for all animals by starting with our four legged family members.

I find rage to be a mitigating factor. As does most of society, it seems. I don't agree with that. I'd better not ever be on a jury where the defense is temporary insanity because the defendant will be playing a a lot of bad prison food. We're supposed to act responsibly regardless of traffic. It's called being an adult. I don't even approve of acting out on SI, so I'm certainly not going to sanction a case of road rage.
